Bas van der Klaauw new General Director of Amsterdam-Rotterdam Consortium for Graduate Education

Professor Bas van der Klaauw has been appointed as the new General Director of Amsterdam-Rotterdam Consortium for Graduate Education (ARC). He succeeds Professor Eric Bartelsman, who has held the position since its inception in 2017 and has been director of the Tinbergen Institute since 2016. Van der Klaauw will take over as of 1 October 2023.

Bas van der Klaauw new General Director of Amsterdam-Rotterdam Consortium for Graduate Education

ARC is the umbrella organisation for research master and graduate (PhD) education in Economics, Econometrics, and Business Data Science at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), University of Amsterdam (UvA) and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU). Currently, ARC encompasses two research masters: Tinbergen Institute Research Master in Economics and Econometrics and the Research Master Business Data Science. It has offices in Amsterdam and Rotterdam.

The Supervisory Board of Tinbergen Institute and the Deans of the schools of economics of EUR, UvA and VU have appointed Van der Klaauw for a period of 2 years (with a maximum of 8 years via reappointment). They are greatly indebted to Eric Bartelsman who has been one of the longest sitting directors of Tinbergen Institute. He initiated the new Business Data Science programme, which connected Tinbergen Institute to quantitative business. Furthermore, they are convinced that Bas van der Klaauw will further enhance the performance and reputation of the graduate school and research institute.

About Bas van der Klaauw

Bas van der Klaauw, Professor in Policy Evaluation at VU, is currently Chair of the Educational Board of Tinbergen Institute. This board issues advice, both solicited and unsolicited, to the Directors of Graduate Studies. In 2008 Van der Klaauw received an ERC Starting Grant and in 2016 a VICI grant from the NWO (Dutch Research Council). In the past he held visiting positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Johns Hopkins University. Currently, he is associated to IZA-Bonn and CEPR-London.

About Amsterdam-Rotterdam Consortium for Graduate Education (ARC)

ARC is the umbrella organisation for Tinbergen Institute and Business Data Science (BDS). As part of its mission to stimulate high quality research, Tinbergen Institute defines quality standards for researchers in the areas of economics, econometrics and finance at the Erasmus School of Economics, the School of Business and Economics of VU Amsterdam and the Faculty of Economics and Business of the University of Amsterdam. Those who meet the quality standards of Tinbergen Institute can become research fellows. Research fellows are nominated by the Director of Graduate Studies; fellowships are granted on behalf of the Board of ARC. Tinbergen Institute has over 150 research fellows, over 200 PhD students, and over 770 PhD alumni. In addition, the Tinbergen Institute research master programme hosts around 50 students, most of which continue in a PhD position in one of the three schools.

The Business Data Science (BDS) research master programme is a joint initiative of the schools of economics and business of Erasmus University Rotterdam, University of Amsterdam and VU Amsterdam. BDS has its own offices and (support) staff in both Rotterdam and Amsterdam (shared with Tinbergen Institute). The BDS programme is embedded in the research culture of the three universities. BDS is an interdisciplinary field that combines business and management expertise with data science skills to help organisations make data-driven decisions. It involves collecting, analysing, and interpreting large amounts of data using statistical and computational techniques to derive insights and create (business) value.
